Find Covetable and Classic Picks at Twigs
For Madison’s own little piece of NYC’s West Village, look no further than Twigs on Monroe Street. It looks exactly like a chic boutique you’d encounter in a chic, intimate neighborhood. Which is part of the reason owner Jen Van Wart selected this very street back in 2002 when she opened the shop.
“My only vision for the store was a clean, white space that was defined by the product in it,” she says. Van Wart also wanted to incorporate the three twig chandeliers she picked up years ago in the décor—it’s the reason behind the shop’s name, too.
Product selection is very much an extension of Van Wart’s personality and wardrobe, something she confesses to immediately when I ask what she looks for her in her buying: “What I buy is pretty much for selfish purposes,” she smiles. Which is good for us. “We’re not slaves to trends here; we’re vintage, classic inspired with an edge. What we carry always has to be great though.”
Look for pieces by Tory Burch, Milly, Vince, Diane von Furstenberg, Rag and Bone and Tibi. But the shop is just as well known for their accessories, too—including an unrivaled collection of Marc Jacobs handbags as well as jewelry by Ben-Amun, AV Max, Jenny Bird, Alexis Bittar and more.
“The things we offer are going to be worth your investment,” says Van Wart. “The designers we carry are prolific and the best at what they do—so we have a carefully curated collection.”

“If you’re lucky enough to be headed somewhere tropical this winter, Diane Von Furstenberg’s mango-hued ‘Whitney’ top is the perfect thing to take with you. For those of us staying put this season—we’ll be relying on pretty pops of color like this to liven up our somber-hued sweaters and jackets,” says Van Wart. $198
Years ago when she lived on the east coast, Van Wart picked up these hand-crafted twig chandeliers from a Pennsylvania artist and brought them all the way here for the store.
The magazine’s style department is always on the lookout for chunky, statement jewelry, and PONO (shown), AV Max, Ben-Amun and Jenny Bird’s pieces always satisfy our fix. $24–$380
Find jeans in a variety of cuts (skinny, bootcut, legging and straight-leg) and colors by Marrakesh, DL 1961, Citizens of Humanity and MiH. $158–$198
The shop has a stunning array of Marc Jacobs handbags. One of Van Wart’s favorites is the “Eugenie”: “This Marc Jacobs fold-over design is the perfectly updated classic that compliments your dressiest shifts as well as your everyday T-shirt and jeans staples.” $495
