Finco takes road less traveled to UW
UW wide receiver Ricky Finco got his first taste of playing at Camp Randall in high school. When he took the field, he immediately knew he wanted to suit up for Wisconsin someday.
“Just looking around at Camp Randall and thinking ‘maybe I could play here some day,’ and trying to make it a reality.”
Even after back-to-back state championships at Arrowhead, Wisconsin didn’t recruit Finco, so he went to play for UW-Whitewater. After a productive freshman season that saw the Warhawks win a national championship, UWW named Finco their “offensive newcomer of the year.”
After the season, Finco felt he had to follow his heart. He applied to UW-Madison, got accepted and took a walk-on spot with the Badgers.
Today, Finco fights for playing time on UW’s scout team.
“I knew I was going to be on the back of the depth chart. I knew it was going to be how it is.”
Because he transferred, Finco has to sit out a year of eligibility, but he takes comfort in knowing he wears the uniform he always wanted.
“I couldn’t be happier with my decision right now.”
The Arrowhead alum also has a new found perspective on life.
“Maybe this is how it was supposed to be. It is what it is, but I’m happy now, so that’s all you can ask for.”
