Fern Lerae Dicks

Fern Lerae Dicks

Fern Lerae Dicks, 94, passed away on Monday, Jan. 8, 2018, at Karmenta Center where she had resided for the past year.

The former Fern Goecks was born on Feb. 12, 1923, in Windsor, the youngest daughter of William and Pauline (Ziesch) Goecks. She was united in marriage to Donald A. Dicks on Aug. 5, 1949, in Reno, Nev. Don preceded her in death on Nov. 26, 1979.

After years of moving as a military wife, Fern found comfort and solace in meticulously maintaining her Madison home and lawn for almost 60 years. She enjoyed gardening, canning and baking, especially family favorites, cherry cheesecake, German chocolate cake, pineapple upside down cake, strawberry rhubarb pie and Christmas candies. Fern found pleasure in sitting in her preferred chair in front of her large picture window, listening to her favorite Daniel O’Donnell CD’s and watching the world go by.

Those she leaves behind include three daughters, Janet (Barry) Jensen of Madison, Sandra (Douglas) Clement of Stoughton, and Jacqueline Dicks of Madison; five grandchildren, Monterey Clement of Stoughton, Jennifer (Kevin) Brau of Racine, Jedediah (Melissa) Jensen of Kalamazoo, Mich., Greggory Butzlaff of Mankato, Minn., and Melissa Butzlaff of Milwaukee; four great-grandchildren, Kevin, Maren, and Larah Brau and Emersyn Jensen; a cousin, Alice Blatterman of Madison; and numerous nieces and nephews, especially the California crew who always remembered her with cards, calls and visits whenever they came back “home” to Wisconsin.

Those who went before her include her parents; husband; brothers, Victor and Marvin Goecks; and sisters, Charlotte Lyngstad, Pearl Bork, and Marie Degenhardt.

Honoring Fern’s wishes, there will be no funeral or memorial service. A private immediate family interment will be held at ROSELAWN MEMORIAL PARK MAUSOLEUM with Pastor Dean Kirst of Lakeview Lutheran Church officiating.

Her grateful family would like to sincerely thank the staff at Karmenta Center and Agrace HospiceCare for Fern’s compassionate care. Online condolences may be made at gundersonfh.com.
