Feingold to step down as U.S. special envoy to Africa lakes region

State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki told Reuters Friday that the U.S. special envoy to Africa’s Great Lakes region, former U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold, will step down next month.

Feingold, a Democrat from Wisconsin, has fronted U.S. attempts to end the conflict in the central Africa’s Great Lakes region since June 2013.

Reuters reported that there has been speculation in some U.S. publications that Feingold was leaving his role as special envoy to run for his old Senate seat next year.

According to Reuters, Psaki said Feingold will deliver his last speech as a special envoy at the U.S. Institute of Peace next week. She told the daily briefing that there will be continued efforts in the Great Lakes region, and a successor will be named.
