Father Saving To Buy Headstone For Slain Sons
A Madison father is trying to raise enough money to buy a headstone for the graves of two of his children who were killed this past summer.
Kevin McArthur has been working at the Goodman Community Center’s food pantry.
“Some days we get 45 (people),” McArthur said. “Some days we get 27. You never know. It’s just the helping process, that’s what I like.”
While his job entails giving things away, McArthur said he’s the one gaining the most.
Before this job, McArthur was out of work. He’s working at the food pantry through a state program helping the unemployed with job training.
“Kevin kind of came to us and we were really honored to provide a healing experience for him, given the circumstances of his life recently,” said Kathy Utley, food security coordinator with the Goodman Community Center.
This past July, the 25-year-old’s sons, Kevin III and Kemaury, ages 3 and 4, were found slain in Madison.
Surrounded by graves with names, dates and memorials, Kevin III and Kemaury’s final resting place lays bare.
“The graves still mean a lot to me,” McArthur said. “But it would mean a lot more to my family if they had the headstone that they deserve.”
McArthur has saved up $500, but the headstone for his boys will cost a little more than $2,000.
“It’ll have both of their pictures on both sides and their names,” McArthur said.
McArthur said he is trying to live his life in a way that honors his children.
“I’m being the father that they knew I was,” McArthur said. “Just living my life the best way I know I can, and trying to have them live through me.”
McArthur said his plan is to attend college and some day start his own business.
