Farres Arlon Harrison
VERONA/BARABOO—Farres A. Harrison, age 85, died, peacefully in his home surrounded by family, on January, 24, 2014 of lung cancer.
He was born September 16, 1928 in Baraboo, WI to Foster and Iva Harrison.
Farres was a teacher for 39 years. In Verona he started out as an Agriculture teacher at the Verona High School and also taught shop classes at the middle school for a number of years. He was instrumental in bringing many VoAg programs to the area, including teaching horticulture, small engine repair and electricity, as well as coordinating and teaching night classes.
On the side, he and his family raised several acres of U-pick strawberries and raspberries. In 2012, he was inducted into the FFA Agriculture Hall of Fame. Farres was active and vibrant until the last few months of his life still riding his beloved Harley Davidson, puttering in his workshop, and meeting his “coffee klatch” buddies. He was well respected by all that had an opportunity to meet him.
Farres is survived by his wife, Linda of 10 years; seven children, Brad (Betty) Harrison of Trego, Debra King of Maryland Heights, MO, Kim (Herb) Warren of Dane, Sandra (Lee) Columbus of Sun Prairie, Susan D. Harrison (Dave Tollefson) of Middleton, Brent Harrison of Champaign, IL, Bart (Claire) Harrison of Verona; 2 step-children, Greg Hicks (Peggy) of Belleville, Ellen Hall (Rick) of Stoughton; 11 grandchildren, Foster (Tracy), Kenton (Lani), Stacie (Mark), Lukes (Betsey), Brandon, Emma, step-grandsons, Lee Michael, Nick, Ian , step-granddaughters Emma and Grace; seven great grandchildren, Jordan, Eliana, Hannah, Hunter, Greyson and 2 step-great grandchildren, Leah and Skye; brother Delmyr (Esther) Harrison of Long Grove, IA, sister-in-law Faye Baumgarten of Strum, sister-in-law Evelyn (Gary) Krugman of Madison and numerous nieces and nephews.
Farres was preceded in death by his wife, Emmy Lou (Emma Louise Baumgarten) of 50 years in 2000, his parents and step mother Gladys; two brothers, Spencer (Harriet) Harrison and Hubert (Eileen) Harrison, and one sister, Arla Beth (Daniel) Spina.
A service will be held at ST.JAMES LUTHERAN CHURCH, South Main Street, Verona, at 11:00 AM on Friday, January 31, 2014, with Rev. Kurt Billings officiating. Visitation will be held at RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 220 Enterprise Drive, Verona, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Thursday, January 30, 2014, and again at the church from 10:00 AM until time of service on Friday. Burial will be at Verona Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations suggested to Agrace Hospice Care or Salvation Army.
