Farmers talk to legislators about troubles facing the agricultural community
MADISON, Wis. — A farmer from Iowa County said Wisconsin dairy farmers are facing a stressful year.
Farmers from across the state came to the Monona Terrace Wednesday for Ag Day. It’s a chance for them to talk to their legislators about agricultural issues.
This includes everything from transportation on rural roads to rural broadband access. Farmers say small farms may have some tough decisions to make in the future.
“This financial stress is actually making people look at their finances a little bit more and how much they want to take away from their equity base and keep their farm going for another two or five years. So that’s kind of the decision a lot of the smaller farms are making right now,” Mineral Point area dairy farmer Richard Gorder said.
Gorder said a number of dairy farmers are having trouble paying their bills with milk prices going significantly down.
