Eugene “Gene” Leonhardt
COTTAGE GROVE-Eugene “Gene” Leonhardt, age 82, of Cottage Grove, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 26, 2014, at Stoughton Hospital.
He was born on Sept. 4, 1932, in Cottage Grove, the son of Minnie and Happy Leonhardt. He married Rosemary McCann on July 12, 1958 at Hope Lutheran Church. Gene served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and worked for the State D.O.T. for 42 years. Following his retirement he drove cars for Zimbrick Buick. Gene enjoyed all sports, and played home talent baseball and softball for many years. He also enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing and camping. Gene was a lifelong member of Hope Lutheran Church and a member of the Cottage Grove Lions Club. He and Rosie also enjoyed their card club for over 50 years.
Gene is survived by his wife, Rosemary; two daughters, Kim (Tony) Martinez and Tracy (Jeff) Steenis; four grandchildren, Roman (Brooke) and Rachel Martinez and Leah and Mason Steenis; and great-grandson, Kaiden Martinez. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Elmer, Walter and Marvin; and two sisters, Florence Drotning and Lorraine Mackey.
Funeral services will be held at HOPE LUTHERAN CHURCH, 3702 County Highway AB, McFarland, at 11 a.m., on Thursday, Oct. 30, 2014, with the Rev. Chris Lee-Thompson presiding. Burial will be at Hope Cottage Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Thursday. A luncheon will follow the service at Doubleday’s in Cottage Grove.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hope Lutheran Church or the Cottage Grove Lions Club.
