Eugene “Gene” Lee Meyer

Stoughton/Montfort – Eugene Lee Meyer, passed away unexpectedly on February 5, 2017 at the Agrace Hospice Care Center in Fitchburg WI.

He was born in Reedsburg on December 20, 1931 to Charles Harold and Viola Bertha (Stoeckmann) Meyer. Eugene (Gene) was preceded in death by his wife Charlane P. (Holden) Meyer on March 8, 2016. His warm heart, ready smile and quick wit will be missed.

In 1949 Gene graduated from Lincoln High School in Wisconsin Rapids and enrolled in the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In 1951 he joined the United States Navy for 4 years, sailing aboard the USS Steinaker. During this time he met and married the love of his life, Charlane Patricia (Charlie) Holden at the Lazarus Reformed Church, Lineboro, MD on Easter Sunday April 5, 1953.

Gene returned to the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Pharmacy school, graduating in 1959. Gene and Charlie moved their young family back to Wisconsin Rapids to begin his career as a pharmacist. He worked as a pharmacist in Wisconsin Rapids, Baraboo, and Wisconsin Dells. In 1970 Gene and Charlie bought a pharmacy in Montfort which they renamed Meyer Pharmacy, fulfilling a lifelong dream. After closing the pharmacy, he worked in Platteville, then at Boscobel Memorial Hospital.

Gene loved God and his family. He had a big heart, willing to extend his love and assistance to many. He enjoyed square and line dancing with his wife. He was an avid fan of his family’s activities, attending many sporting and music events, even assisting in stage productions. In his spare time he tinkered on cars, remodeled his homes, refinished furniture, and worked on puzzles. He served on the Montfort Village Board and the Montfort United Methodist Church Board. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Shriners, and Kiwanis.

After retirement in 2001 Gene and Charlie became “snow birds” until they moved to North Ft. Meyers, Florida in 2004. They returned to Wisconsin to be near family in 2013.
