Local businessman, Eugene “Gene” Gerald Hersil, 74, of Mauston, Wisconsin, died on Friday, March 3, 2017 at his home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, March 9 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 401 Mansion Street, Mauston. Friends may call beginning at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the Church. Burial will be the following day, Friday, March 10 at Miller Cemetery in Hinkley, IL.

Gene was born October 21, 1942 in Chicago, IL to Gerald (Jerry) and Marie (Delmore) Hersil (Hresil). He graduated from Madonna Catholic High School in Mauston in 1960 and from the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse in 1965. He met his wife, Rosemarie Christine (Ziegler) of 48 years at the Badger Ammunition Plant in Baraboo, WI. They were married on February 26, 1969 and loved to travel the world together.

Gene was a career insurance agent and his charisma and charm led him to consistently be one of the leading agent’s in his region. An avid runner, Gene continued to run 5Ks up until his death. He was known for his sense of humor, physical toughness, good looks and intellect. He loved history, was a bibliophile, and could often be found amid his extensive book collection. He had proudly served as a member of the U.S. Army in the Wisconsin National Guard and was a member of the American Legion.

Most important, he was a best friend to his wife and an unwavering mentor and advocate for his children.

Gene is survived by his wife, Rosemarie, his three children, Gerald (Jerry) Joseph Hersil and his wife Shelley of Merrill, WI; Angela Marene Hersil and her husband Atanu Deb Baruah of Brookfield, WI; and John David Hersil and his wife Ann of Mauston; seven grandchildren – Samantha Courtney Hersil, Nathanial Nicholas Hersil, Caroline Jean Deb Baruah, Heather Rose Hersil, Jack Kumar Deb Baruah, Hannah Frances Hersil and Luke Patrick Deb Baruah; his mother, Marie; his sister Patricia Piazza of Milwaukee, WI, and nearly two dozen nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Gerald (Hresil) Hersil, and his infant brother, Ronald.

Any memorials will be distributed among Gene’s favorite charities including the Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary Help of Christians, at Holy Hill,1525 Carmel Road, Hubertus, WI 53033.

Gene had a great love for his wife, children and grandchildren. His wife, children and grandchildren had a great love for him.
