Two men arrested in Florida a week after walking away from a Jackson County correctional facility are now suspected in the brutal beating of a convenience store clerk in the Tampa area.

James Newman and James Misleveck were arrested early Wednesday morning near Miami. The men were reported missing from Black River Correctional in Black River Falls July 17.

Police said Newman and Misleveck kidnapped a woman at gunpoint and stole several vehicles before driving to Florida.

The men are allegedly captured on video Sunday in Seffner, Fla., east of Tampa, attacking and beating an elderly convenience store clerk before stealing cash and cigarettes.

The clerk is listed in serious condition, but is improving, according to WTSP-TV in Tampa.

Newman and Misleveck made a court appearance Thursday morning in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. They are being held without bond on federal escape charges.

Police said the men tried to run from officers in Hollywood, Florida, after a high-speed chase.

Police said Misleveck was arrested while trying to jump over a fence. Newman climbed a tree and eventually jumped down and tried to run away, but was taken down by a police dog, according to police.

Along with the charges in Florida, Newman and Misleveck face a federal weapons charge and possible charges in Jackson and Monroe counties.
