Erwin Frank Crothers
Erwin Frank Crothers, 90, died in the evening on August 25, 2012 in the home where he was born and lived his entire life. Born September 20, 1921, the only child of Archie and Laura (Clough) Crothers, Erwin attended the Ward School, which was named after his great, great grandfather. Erwin graduated from the Wisconsin Dells High School as a proud member of the class of 1939, and then continued his life’s hard career as a farmer. On September 24, 1949, he was married to Ruth Ramsey in the Big Spring Church by Rev. J. W. Davies, and together he and Ruth toiled in the life they both knew and loved.
Erwin served many years on the Ward School Board, until and through the tumultuous years of rural school consolidation. Later he served on the Wisconsin Dells School Board. Erwin served for decades on the Big Spring Cemetery Board and was a lifelong attendee and supporter of the Big Spring Congregational Church. He continued working as hard as possible on the farm until the very end of his life. Erwin faced the many infirmities of age with courage and resolve, taking each further bit of bad news with graceful acceptance.
Erwin was preceded in death by his mother in 1954, father in 1987, aunts, uncles, cousins and so many friends.
Erwin is survived by Ruth, his wife of nearly 63 years; son Kenneth (Constance) at home; daughter Marie and her fiancé Randy Peterson of Eau Claire; very special family member Ron (Janine) Jensen of Oxford; step-grandsons Richard (Michelle) Johnson of Fort Mill, SC, Nick (Emily) Johnson of Wisconsin Dells, and Josh (Natasha) Johnson of Wisconsin Dells; great-grandchildren, Gretchen, Logan, Addison, Audra, Neveah, Isabelle, and Danica; nieces, nephews, and friends.
Erwin was known by his neighbors and friends for his quick wit, loyalty, generosity and integrity. He was treasured by his family for his unwavering values and commitment. A quiet and dignified man, Erwin set a high standard of character for his family to follow and is now resting after a long life well lived.
Visitation will be from 9 to 11 AM on Tuesday, August 28, 2012, at the Big Spring Congregational Church. The funeral will begin at 11 AM with Pastor Bob Brandhagen officiating. Burial will follow at the Big Spring Cemetery.
