Erna Marion Schendel
Erna Marion Schendel, age 91, passed away on Saturday, February 8, 2014 in Madison. She was born on March 4, 1922 to Cora and George Vangsnes in Kindrid, North Dakota. The family moved to her Mother’s parents’ farm North of Greenwood, WI in 1925. She attended Christopherson Grade School & graduated from Greenwood High School. She worked in the Clark County Treasurer’s Office in Neillsville, WI prior to marrying Herbert Schendel on September 11, 1940. They farmed Herb’s family farm and raised five children. Erna’s activities were teaching Sunday school & summer bible school and playing the organ for the church. She was also a member of the church ladies aid group and was a county 4-H leader. Erna was an excellent cook, seamstress and loved crafts. After moving to Madison in 1963 she attended Madison Area Technical College. She worked at the UW-Madison, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences retiring in 1984 after 20 years of service as the payroll and fringe benefits supervisor. She and Herb enjoyed 22 years of retirement together travelling throughout the United States, Hawaii and Mexico. They especially enjoyed their fly in fishing trips to Canada and spending time with family.
Survivors include Erna’s brother, Philip Vangsnes; sister-in-law, Frances Vangsnes; daughters, Judith (Darrell) Barth and Linda (Steve) Short; sons, Jon Schendel and Jim (Mary) Schendel; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; as well as many cherished nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Herbert, daughter, Cora, infant sister, Amy, brother, Clark and sister-in-law, Bette Vangsnes.
A memorial service will be held at a date to be determined and inurnment will follow at St. Matthews Cemetery in Wilton, WI.
