Emma Marcella Lawry
Madison – Emma Marcella (Stanek) Lawry, beloved Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother, passed away on February 3, 2014 at Agrace Hospice Center in Fitchburg, surrounded by her family.
Emma was born in Yuba, Wis. on December 5, 1922, the 7th child of Anton and Josephine Stanek. Emma was raised in the Hillsboro/Wonewoc area of the state and proud of her Czech heritage. When she moved to Madison she met the love of her life, William Lawry, at a dance. They were married for 51 years and were blessed with four children, before he passed away in 1999. Emma was an avid gardener, accomplished baker and enjoyed canning and cooking for her family. She was known for always having cookies or bars ready for anyone that stopped by and a holiday dinner was not complete without her rohlikys.
She enjoyed spending time outdoors, especially at their property up-north. Family and friends were always welcome and were often found playing cards or chatting around the campfire. Emma and Bill loved to dance and could be often found at dance halls in their prime. They owned and operated a family electrical business for over 30 years. Most of all, Emma enjoyed spending time with her family. She was a devoted mother and proud of her four children. She enjoyed visits from, and adored her 10 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Emma was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and was involved in the church Women’s Quilting group until she was 89 years old. She was a resident of Prairie Gardens Assisted Living and appreciated the kindness and care she received there.
Emma is survived by her children: Linda (Craig) Harbort, Marilyn (Lloyd) Simpson, Monica (Don) Slaght and Larry (Kim) Lawry; her grandchildren: Heather (Bill) Pellino, Christopher (Amy) Harbort, Jim (Laura) Simpson, Bill Simpson, Laurie Slaght (Dennis Puzz), Chad Slaght, Adryan Slaght, Angela Hoffman (Brian Yuker), Shane (Dawn) Lawry and Dan Lawry. She is further survived by her 21 great-grandchildren, her brother, Fred Stanek, sisters-in-law, Dorothy Stanek, Eleanor Schultz and Carol Mahnke, brother-in-law, Raymond Lawry, as well as many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by brothers; Albert, Leo and Raymond and sister Helen.
