Elwood John Anderson
New Glarus, WI — Elwood “Andy” John Anderson, 79, of New Glarus, Wisconsin, passed away in his home with his family by his side on September 20, 2013.
Andy was born in Madison, Wisconsin, on July 6, 1934 to his parents, John and Eleanore Anderson. He graduated from Madison East High School in 1953 and went on to serve in the United States Navy from 1954 until 1956.
Andy married his high school sweetheart, Donna Anderson (Oasen), on April 30, 1955 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Madison. They enjoyed 58 years of marriage, family, work and life together.
Following his service in the Navy, Andy worked for WT Grant Company as a Store Manager, later becoming a District Manager over several stores. In 1975, he and his family moved to New Glarus to fulfill Andy’s lifelong dream of opening a store of his own. Anderson’s Ben Franklin (later named Anderson’s Kaufhaus) quickly became a central part of the downtown area.
Following his retirement in 2000, he and Donna transformed the store into a mini-mall they owned and operated together called Anderson Mall. He devoted himself to his family and his work, always seeking ways to serve the community and make New Glarus a vibrant and wonderful place to live and visit. He was an active member in the New Glarus Chamber of Commerce for many years and served as President; he had an incredible servant-heart within his church, served on the congregation council and as volunteer groundskeeper. He was also a member of the Stuessy-Kuenzi American Legion and past-member of the New Glarus Lion’s Club.
Andy enjoyed tending to his yard, wood-working, following his grandchildren in their sporting events, spending time with his family, watching Badger football and basketball games from the comfort of his home, and playing euchre with friends.
Andy was a proud father, grandfather and great-grandfather and is survived by his children, Brenda (Duane) Siegenthaler, Linda Klitzke, and David (Kris) Anderson; his grandchildren, Stephanie (Troy) Loether, Erick and Alissa Siegenthaler, Derek (Brittany) and Danielle Klitzke, and Bryce and Jenna Anderson and his great-grandchildren, Tianna, Chloe, Isaac and Ephraim Loether. He is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Agnes Anderson and Norma Anderson, a brother-in-law Marv Holstein, several nieces and nephews and many friends, along with his Jack Russell Terrier and constant companion, Brandi.
Andy is preceded in death by his parents, John and Eleanore Anderson, and his brothers, Thormand (Tom) and Orvin Anderson, sister-in-law Barbara Holstein, brothers-in-law Robert and John Oasen, and a nephew Michael Anderson.
Andy taught and lived the value of treating others as you would like to be treated and will always be remembered for his humility, generosity, thoughtfulness, work ethic and devotion to his family and friends.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 25, 2013 at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, 506 Twelfth Ave. in New Glarus. Pastor Gene Talley will be officiating. Burial with military honors will follow the funeral service at the West Primrose Cemetery.
