June 24th at 9:30 until time of service at the church. Elsie was born on November 19, 1919 to Andrew & Catherine (Schneider) Kaiser at their home south of Kieler, WI.
Elsie had 4 brothers, 2 sisters, 1 step brother and 1 step sister. She had happy childhood memories, including riding horses, watching her parents dance and joining her mom and dad for long trips to Dubuque, IA selling wagon loads of produce at the farmers’ market. The first Sunday of each month was special because her dad would make breakfast and invite the neighbors in for what would become locally known as Kaiser’s Communion Sunday. Elsie attended grades 1-8 at Immaculate Conception Grade School in Kieler, WI.
Her plans to continue her education changed dramatically when her parents required continuous home care. Elsie selflessly gave 14 years of her life caring for her parents. At age 28, Elsie entered the work force, by serving as a mid-wife for many families, followed by working at the local tavern at Happy Corners, WI. While working at the tavern, she met the man of her dreams, Merlin. She was united in marriage on September 1, 1948 to Merlin Burbach at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sinsinawa, WI, with a reception held at her brothers George’s house. Since Merlin came from a farming family, Elsie and Merlin continued that tradition by renting their first farm for a year. They then purchased a local farm, where they resided until selling the farm in 1973. While at home, Elsie loved to bake, care for her flock of chickens, work in her huge garden and canned much of her family’s food. After selling the family farm, they moved to rural Cuba City, WI, where she held jobs at the Stable Hotel, Hofer’s Café in Cuba City and worked for her son David in Platteville, WI. Later Elsie worked at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church performing house work and cooking for numerous pastors at the parish. She enjoyed fishing with her grandsons, gardening and spending time with her family. Elsie and Merlin renewed their 60th wedding vows at St. Augustine’s Parish in Platteville, WI. Elsie was a lady who was always willing to help others; was kind hearted and a pleasure to be around. She had a great personality and was loved by many. She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Elsie is survived by 2 sons: David (fiancée Cheryl Huggins) of Platteville, WI and Mark (Jo) of Gays Mills, WI; 6 grandchildren: Amy Crooks, Sarah Weigel, Lorna Olson, Andy Burbach, Luke Burbach and Adam Burbach; 11 great grandchildren; 1 brother-in-law: Paul (Maryann) Burbach; along with many nieces and nephews. Elsie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Merlin (August 30, 2012) and all of her brothers and sisters. In lieu of flowers an Elsie K.
Burbach Memorial Fund has been established.
