She was united in marriage in Chicago, IL, on March 9, 1943, to Thomas O’Connor of Montello, WI. Ella spent her long working career in Madison starting with Main Appliance, USAFI, and retiring at age 69 from the US Department of Labor. She was granted several awards for her work ethic and years of service.

Her three granddaughters , Mya Bakken (Steve) Collins of Madison, Mari Bakken (Craig) Lower of New Albany, OH and Shani Sparish (Mark) Meyer of DeForest and eight special great grandchildren, Drew and Emma Collins, Jack, Abby, Grant, and Mitchell Lower and Hadley and Tatum Meyer. Ella “GG” adored spending time with her great grandchildren and would get the biggest smile on her face around them.
She is further survived by her sister-in-law, Mary O’Connor of Pickford, MI, favorite niece, Barbara Jean Patterson of Kalamazoo, MI, nephews, Jim (Paulette) Patterson of Largo, FL, Bill, Dick, and Dan O’Connor of Pickford, MI, Tim O’Connor of Rogers, AK, Tom (Mary) O’Connor of Oklahoma City, OK and Barry (Mary) O’Connor of Sault Ste. In her later years the joy of Ella’s life was her family and their friends. She was loving to all and enjoyed attending their major events and milestones. Her greatest passions were trips to Vegas to play Keno and attending James Madison Memorial High School Boys Basketball games with her son, Mike, cheering on the teams coached by her granddaughter’s husband, Steve Collins. As the years progressed, Ella became the teams’ biggest fan giving good luck hugs to the team members before each game and congratulatory hugs after the win. She became such a familiar face in the stands she was adopted by the teams as their “GG.”
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff and caregivers at All Saints Assisted Living, especially Robin and Cayla, and the doctors, nurses, and caregivers at UW Hospital, Unit B6 4.
A private family burial service will be held on Friday, January, 12, 2018, at Roselawn Memorial Park, Monona, WI. A celebration of Ella’s life will be held at a later date this summer. Memorials may be made to a charity of your choice.
