Elderly woman seriously injured in head-on crash with suspected drunk driver
MADISON, Wis. — An 81-year-old woman is recovering from multiple serious injuries Wednesday morning after her car was hit by a suspected drunk driver overnight.
Madison police say 47-year-old Chad Martin was driving the wrong way down East Washington Avenue at about 11 p.m. Tuesday night without his headlights on when he crashed head-on with a car carrying an elderly couple near East Towne Mall.
The 81-year-old woman injured was a passenger in that car and was admitted into the hospital with multiple broken bones, among other injuries.
Martin ran from the scene but was arrested shortly after the crash at his mother’s house. Police say he was not cooperative with officers, and officers obtained a blood sample after taking him to the hospital.
He was booked into the Dane County Jail on tentative charges of Operating a Motor Vehicle While Intoxicated – Causing Injury, Reckless Driving – Causing Bodily Harm, Driving the Wrong Way on a Divided Highway, Operating a Vehicle Without Lighted Lamps and an outstanding Parole Warrant.
