Edna Marie Schara
Waunakee WI – Edna Marie (Michels) Schara, age 98, passed away peacefully in her sleep on November 3rd, 2014.
She spent this last year of her long precious life at The Artisan Assistant Living & Memory Care facility in Middleton WI, along with the helpful care of Hospice. Our family is extremely grateful for their kindness in keeping her comfortable to the end.
Edna was born September 3rd, 1916, to Martin and Sarah (Schwarz) Michels in West Point WI, where she was raised and lived on the family farm with her two brothers and one sister until she was united in marriage to her loving husband Fred “Doc” Schara. On June 3rd, 1944, they began their life together and raised two daughters, Janette and Jane in Madison WI.
Before Edna was married, she was employed at St. Mary’s Hospital, where she was a Switch Board Operator and worked in the Mary Jane Shop. After starting her family, she worked many jobs: Wisco Hardware, Lumberman’s, Gaylord Catering, and cleaning houses to name a few. She was an active member of St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church and Elementary School, serving on the Altar Society, baking fruit cakes, Friday night bingos, Country Fairs, and many other school and church functions and was the school Librarian for many years.
Edna loved to cook, including canning and baking. She was very skilled in making tiered cakes for weddings, anniversaries, and many other occasions and she enjoyed hosting luncheons and dinner parties. She was a sharp card player, which she loved to play with both family and friends, and she and Doc spent a lot of time with the “Coffee Gang” whom they met and were great friends with for many years. She was an avid reader, enjoyed gardening and she made beautiful quilts. Most of all she loved being with and was very proud of her family. Her great-grandchildren were the light of her life.
Edna leaves behind her two daughters, Janette Hermanson of Waunakee WI, Jane Kuronen (Veikko) of Kitchener Ontario Canada. Four granddaughters, Michelle Hermanson Fischer (Arthur) of Columbus WI; Jane Andrashie (Tony) of Fountain Hills AZ; Kaarina Losey (Tom) of Brantford Ontario Canada; and Kristina Kuronen of Kitchener Ontario Canada. Five beloved great-grandchildren, Anastasia Kuronen-Shoemaker (Jordan); Abbigail and Bryce Andrashie; and Sean and Laurel Losey. One sister-in-law, Arlene Michels of Lodi WI, and many nieces, nephews and special friends that all adored her.
