Editorial: Wisconsin has more jobs than we have qualified workers for
We have no quarrel with Gov. Scott Walker’s request to the State Legislature for close to $7 million to try to attract talent to the Wisconsin labor market.
We’ve got more jobs than we have qualified workers right now and if Foxconn’s the success we all hope it will be that gap will widen. A campaign highlighting Wisconsin’s many quality of life assets couldn’t hurt. Our bigger concern is the proposal’s not enough.
First of all the Legislature should make sure there’s money available to train unemployed and underemployed workers already here in Wisconsin, especially in Milwaukee.
Second, some of that money, or many additional money, would be best spent on actually making this state a place where talented people want to come live, have a family, maybe even start their own business someday.
The current administration and legislative majority have been so busy preserving the Wisconsin economy of last century they’ve neglected the economy of the future. Promote that and let’s see who wants to live and work here.
