WISC EDITORIAL AGENDA 2012 – TIME FOR KIDS/ HEALTH CARE
With the US system of health care once again in great flux, Americans will be spending another extended period of time discussing what kind of health care we want and how we want it delivered and paid for. These are tough conversations for adults, with serious ramifications. But as we were reminded this week by our WISC Youth Advisory Board, the implications are even greater for kids.
Here’s some context. The poverty rate for children in Wisconsin is growing at two times the national average. We are trending down in most measurements of children’s well being. And one in seven kids is on some kind of public assistance.
Here’s one way to look at it: we’ll never close the achievement gap without addressing the basic needs agenda. Perhaps we should start there as we re-start the health care discussion.
