Editorial: Whose government is it?
MADISON, Wis. — This week’s Marquette Law School poll showed 80 percent of Wisconsinites questioned want universal background checks. Eighty percent. Eight in ten. That’s Democrats and Republicans, men and women, urban and rural, you name it and you name it. And our elected lawmakers, especially majority Republicans don’t care what 8 out of 10 of us think. Hence our editorial agenda issue of reclaiming our government.
Governor Tony Evers had a great suggestion in this week’s Capital Times. He told editor Paul Fanlund voters should ask candidate for office in next year’s election two questions: do you back increased Medicaid expansion and do you support background checks for gun buyers. On those two issues as well as ending rigged, gerrymandered elections, the public is way ahead of politicians. Which raises the question: whose government is it? It if it is indeed ours it’s pretty clear what we want.
