Editorial: Urban League’s 50th anniversary jobs pledge

Next year is the Urban League of Greater Madison’s 50th Anniversary and recently the league announced it plans to honor the occasion with a commitment to place 1,500 low income job seekers into career pathway employment by 2020.

We believe they can do it. With our help they will do it.

Imagine the difference in the lives of Madison families, in our community’s foundation and in disgraceful disparity numbers 1,500 newly employed people will mean.

The league has set an ambitious goal of raising $2 million to support the effort, but Alliant Energy, American Family, CUNA Mutual, Exact Sciences and Madison Gas and Electric have pledged $410,000 already.

The Urban League is the right organization to lead this effort. League CEO Ruben Anthony describes the league as a place of second chances. It’s also a place of community building and we support this important piece of that work.
