Editorial: Time For Kids — Childhood Obesity
However one enters the discussion of food systems, sustainable agriculture and Slow Food, inevitably the discussion leads to health and childhood obesity. One of our most glaring failures as a society to come to grips with the flaws in our food culture is the epidemic of overweight kids and the health and happiness issues that result. They are profound, and they are costly both in dollars and in quality of life.
This is a big issue, involving our families and socio-economics, our communities and our schools, our lifestyles and habits. It’s going to take a big effort to achieve change. Today marks the kick-off of WISC’s year-long Time for Kids project to bring awareness and education to this important issue. With our partner Dean Clinic we will explore the causes, impact and prevention strategies for childhood obesity. We invite you to join us for the next 12 months as we look to our plates and our playgrounds for ways to nurture healthier kids.
