Editorial: The Wisconsin State Legislature can still manage to get things done
MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin State Legislature is too much of a hyper-partisan, dysfunctional mess for us to praise too highly.
But despite itself it can still manage to get things done. In the last week Governor Tony Evers signed well over 60 bills that had enough bipartisan support to reach his desk. And some of them are really important.
New laws expanding access to substance use disorder treatment and recovery services will save lives. Additional bills concerning money laundering and thefts of letters or packages from residences will improve safety. There are new resources for veterans and support for broadband services. And we were very pleased the Governor signed the bipartisan police body camera bill into law. In a political environment that seems to invite cynicism we need to celebrate when our elected officials actually do the work they were elected to do. And obviously they could do it more often…if they wanted to.
