Editorial: The pursuit of ethics
MADISON, Wis. — And so once more, we look for hope where we can find it. These are very hard times.
We live in an ethically challenged society with leadership lacking in wisdom or vision or courage. So we turn to our young people for hope, and acknowledge our responsibility to help them be better than us.
Friday, the Rotary Club of Madison is hosting its annual Ethics Symposium at Monona Terrace. More than 200 juniors from 22 Dane County high schools will participate. They will think about and discuss ethical decision making with everyday examples.
And of course they will do so with the images of Florida’s horrible mass killing of 17 people, including high school students like them, fresh in their minds. Ending the heartbreaking gun violence seems beyond our abilities. But helping our young adults be better than that is not. Maybe that’s the best we can do right now.
