Editorial: Reclaiming our government is source of optimism
MADISON, Wis. — It’s counter-intuitive that during a year of deeply disappointing missed opportunities by the United State Supreme Court among others to end partisan gerrymandering that reclaiming our government is actually a source of optimism as we review our agenda for the year.
First of all it was another court, a North Carolina trial court, that recently showed precisely how rigged elections can be made fair again. The three-judge panel, two Democrats and a Republican, struck down North Carolina’s egregious gerrymandering so decisively neither party appealed the decision.
But perhaps even more positive is the growing grass roots effort here in Wisconsin to end the un-democratic system of lawmakers picking their voters rather than voters picking their elected officials. Polls show citizens overwhelmingly support independent boundary drawing panels. There’s a statewide Fair Maps for Wisconsin Summit coming up next month in Marshfield that we believe will win over some honest lawmakers with integrity. Tomorrow, how we’re doing with solving problems.
