Editorial: More beds, more help
MADISON, Wis. — On Monday, Madison and South-Central Wisconsin moves a step closer to providing greater mental health care for more children and teens.
UnityPoint Health – Meriter will hold a holding a groundbreaking celebration for its Child and Adolescent Psychiatry expansion, which will double the existing space and provide more patient rooms, new therapy spaces and needed intensive day treatment programs.
The big need is inpatient beds. The current facility has 20, and a waitlist of 26 kids at any given time during the school year. As we are learning, and reporting, as part of our Time for Kids, Time to Talk project this year, mental health is a serious and pervasive issue facing a growing number of kids, their families, their schools and their communities. Treatment works, but we have to dedicate the resources to provide that treatment.
We want to be a community that cares about the health, physical and mental, of our children. Monday’s groundbreaking is indeed something to celebrate.
