Crisis clinic recognizes need.
MENTAL HEALTH INTERVENTION
The relationship between mental health and behavior is not always direct or clear. We as a society are still too slow to understand mental illness and too quick to jump to conclusions. If nothing else stories like that out of Aurora, Colorado last week offer ample evidence of our need to better address mental health.
Dane County took a step in that direction recently with the announcement it is opening a clinic to provide temporary help for people in crisis who are waiting to get into long term treatment. The lack of parity in insurance for mental health care, and insufficient treatment options, are two great indictments of our failure to recognize mental health needs. More than 100 people are on a waiting list in Dane County alone.
The new temporary clinic is not an answer. It’s a start. But we can do better.
