The Foundation for Madison Public Schools, one of the best things we’ve got going in this city, recently added a line to its name – Schools Make Madison. That’s right on so many levels, and never in better evidence than at Thursday’s Adopt-a-School Summit.

First of all it was a great turnout of school folks, public education supporters and businesses and nonprofits looking to adopt a school or expand their existing school partnership.

And those folks had to have been inspired by a terrific panel, including Thoreau social worker Liz Sorge, Group Health Community Care Manager Ginger Francis, Jefferson Middle School Dean Andrew Washicheck, Madison West Rotary’s Deb Deiter and East High Principal Mike Hernandez and American Family Diversity Manager Leslie Vitale.

As a group they modeled the success and potential of adopting a school and the benefits to both adopter and adoptee, but most importantly to kids. That’s why we do this. I’ll add one more benefactor – Madison. Because schools make Madison.
