Editorial: Fitchburg and Boys & Girls Club come together for kids
FITCHBURG, Wis. — The news over the weekend that city of Fitchburg alders were drafting a budget amendment to make $100,000 available for non-profits, such as the Boys & Girls Club of Dane County, is a welcome and generous step toward resolution of a conflict that was contentious yet important and meaningful.
We believe Boys and Girls Club president Michael Johnson was right to stand up for public support for children. But we also believe Fitchburg leaders, including Mayor Jason Gonzales have been trying to do the right thing. Things got a little clumsy and some unfortunate things were said. But if feels to us as if folks on both sides took a little to listen and time and we like where this is headed.
We need advocates for children like Johnson. We need responsible and responsive elected leaders. Ideas currently on the table respect both. And Fitchburg children will be the ultimate beneficiaries.
