Editorial: Finding the ‘highest right’ at the Rotary Club of Madison Ethics Symposium
MADISON, Wis. — For an event that that is now 20 years old the Rotary Club of Madison’s annual ethics symposium is one of the underappreciated civic gifts to our community.
What could be more important, especially now, than teaching our young people the value of standards of behavior that respect rights and dignity and produce the most good and the least harm?
Each year over 200 juniors from 19 Dane County high schools participate in the Symposium considering provocative dilemmas with diverse peer groups that ensure different perspectives and experiences. Rules and guidelines teach civic discourse and ethical thinking. The ultimate goal is higher levels of ethical reasoning.
We find it extremely hopeful that so many young people are wanting to engage in this challenging and rewarding experience. And we deeply appreciate Rotary Club of Madison for providing the opportunity.
