25 YEARS OF TAKING A STAKE IN THE LAKES
Serious concern for Madison’s lakes probably goes back 50 years at least, but the more formal, action-oriented, Take a Stake in the Lakes event sponsored by the Dane County Office of Lakes and Watersheds is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year and it’s easy to see how the effort has grown.
First of all the weekend event is now three weeks long. Second, it has important new partners like the Clean Lakes Alliance. And lastly it is now an annual opportunity to benchmark projects like the long-standing partnership with the state DNR and the new project with the Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District.
But Take a Stake in the Lakes, which concludes Saturday with the clean-up of Lakes Monona, Waubesa and Wingra, really highlights how much success we’re enjoying in devoting time, money and strategic thinking into our most valuable natural resources…our lakes.
