East succeeding on and off the court

WIAA changes basketball timing for 2015-16 season

The Madison East boys basketball team is tied for first place in the Big Eight conference with an 11 and 3 record.

The Purgolders say their on-court success is directly tied to a renewed effort their focus off the court.

A number of the teams’ leaders have taken part in a voluntary program called “L.E.A.D.” which stands for “Leadership, Excellence and Achievement Development.” The program is designed to provide positive role models and teach young men leadership qualities.

“I think we’ve definitely seen results in the leadership and their character,” said East head basketball coach Matt Miota. “It’s definitely translated.”

“If little kids look up to us and see us doing good things,” says East junior Deang Deang, “they’re definitely going to want to do that when they’re in high school.]

East is is trying to win its first Big Eight Conference boys basketball championship since the 2008-2009 season.
