Drunken driver leads police on short pursuit after rear-end crash, officials say
MONROE, Wis. — A Monroe man led police on a short pursuit Wednesday morning after being involved in a rear-end crash, Green County officials said.
Green County sheriff’s deputies responded around 10:15 a.m. to reports of a two-vehicle crash on the Highway 11 off ramp to Highway 69 and Highway 81 in the Town of Monroe, according to a release.
Dennis E. Beutel, 48, of Monroe, exited Highway 11 via the off ramp and proceeded toward the intersection, but failed to stop and collided with another vehicle that was stopped at the stop sign at the intersection, investigators said. Joseph M. Van Matre, 30, of Monroe was stopped at the stop sign, waiting to turn left onto Highway 69 when the crash happened.
When deputies arrived, Beutel fled the crash scene in his vehicle and deputies pursued the vehicle into the city of Monroe, according to the release. The pursuit lasted about a mile before Beutel was arrested.
Beutel faces tentative charges of knowingly fleeing an officer, third-offense operating while under the influence and bail jumping, officials said. He was also cited for hit-and-run to an attended vehicle, following too close and failure to wear a seat belt.
No one was injured in the crash, according to the release.
