Driving, parking tips for busy commencement weekend

If you do not need to be in downtown Madison or near Camp Randall Stadium this weekend avoid the area.

Tens of thousands of people will take part in the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s commencement ceremonies Friday and Saturday. At the same time thousands of students will move out of residence halls.

A ceremony for doctoral and professional students is set for Friday May 16 at the Kohl Center starting at 5:30 p.m. A single commencement ceremony for other students will take place Saturday at Camp Randall at noon.

School officials said campus and surrounding traffic may be similar to a football Saturday, but with more people who are unfamiliar with the area. School, college and department ceremonies will also take place at various times through the weekend.

Here are a few tips from school officials you will want to remember:

– Allow extra time to find parking and get to your destination
– All campus lots will be free tarting at noon on Friday May 16 – 6 p.m. Sunday
– Parking is on a first-come, first-serve basis
– Limited parking close to Camp Randall and the Kohl Center
– Parking unavailable on Regent Street between Monroe Street and Park Street from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Saturday
– Restricted parking on both sides of Breese Terrace and Monroe Street from 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. Saturday
– Breese Terrace will be closed for traffic 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. Saturday
– Monroe Street will be closed immediately after Commencement for an hour
– Immediate lots near Camp Randall, Lots 18 and 19 will be unavailable for parking. Towing will be enforced from 4 p.m. Friday – 5 p.m. Saturday.
– Free Shuttle Service on Saturday
– Operating every 10 minutes from 8 a.m. – noon, then 1:15 p.m. – 6 p.m.
– Entire shuttle loop takes roughly 20 minutes to complete
– Route 80 bus will be free and runs through campus
