Driver takes eyes off road, strikes tree, fire officials say
MADISON, Wis. — A driver was injured Tuesday night when she struck a tree on Madison’s west side, officials said.
The Madison Fire Department said a woman told paramedics she was driving in the 200 block of South Whitney Way at about 8 p.m. She said she was driving about 40 mph when she took her eyes off the road. She veered off the road, onto the sidewalk and struck a tree.
The crash caused significant front-end damage to the vehicle and took a front wheel off the axle, the fire department said. Airbags deployed, and the woman was wearing her seatbelt.
Paramedics evaluated the patient, who did not suffer significant injuries, and took her to UW Hospital, according to the report.
A fire crew called to the scene to check for leaks and other hazards said there were none. Firefighters turned off the vehicle and left the scene in the care of Madison police.
