Driver falls asleep, crashes into house, officials say

A Dickeyville man injured in a Sunday morning crash told deputies he thought fell asleep before rolling his van and crashing into the corner of a house, officials said.

Grant County sheriff’s officials received a call around 11:05 a.m. reporting a single-vehicle rollover crash on County Road Z where a man was found lying in the road, according to a release. The exact location on County Road Z was unclear, but first responders eventually found the man north of Hyview Road at 1532 County Road Z.

La Vern Kuhle, 86, of Dickeyville, was driving his 2014 Dodge Caravan north on County Road Z before the incident happened, officials said.

Kuhle told a deputy he had just left St. Joseph’s School on County Road Z from a breakfast and thought he may have fallen asleep, according to the release. When the road curved left, Kuhle failed to negotiate the curve, which caused his van to go across a farm field and hit the southeast corner of the house at 1532 County Road Z.

The van rolled over and stopped on the driver’s side, investigators said. Kuhle was eventually able to get out of the back door of the van and made his way to the front of the house, where a passerby found him, according to the release.

Kuhle was taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries he suffered in the crash.

The back side of the house and foundation sustained very severe damage, officials said. The crash remains under investigation.
