Driver crashes into building after swerving to avoid hitting chipmunk
MADISON, Wis. — A driver crashed into a building on Madison’s east side Monday when he swerved to avoid hitting a chipmunk in the road.
Fire officials said they found the driver’s vehicle in the side of a multi-use commercial building in the 2200 block of Independence Lane. The car pushed the brick exterior and internal drywall 1-2 feet into the building, according to an incident report.
The driver was uninjured and everyone inside the building was able to safely evacuate after the crash.
Responding firefighters shut off the natural gas supply as a precaution while others worked to figure out if the building was structurally sound.
The city’s building inspection confirmed the structure was safe and Madison Gas & Electric confirmed there weren’t any electrical or natural gas hazards.
According to the report, the driver told firefighters he mistakenly hit the accelerator instead of the brakes just before the crash.
