Driver charged in fatal drunken driving crash
JANESVILLE, Wis. — A 28-year-old man is facing charges in connection with a crash that killed one person and injured another in May in Rock County, officials said.
The Janesville Police Department said in a news release Tuesday that Leon E. Bridges, of Brooklyn is facing charges including homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle, homicide by use of a vehicle with a prohibited alcohol concentration, causing injury by intoxicated use of a vehicle, and causing injury by use of a vehicle with a prohibited alcohol concentration.
According to the release, Bridges was driving a vehicle on West Court Street near Austin Road at 2:30 p.m. on May 3 with two passengers in the vehicle. Bridges crashed the vehicle and he and one of the passengers, Calvin M. Hanchett, were ejected. Hanchett was killed, and another passenger, Michael D. Asmus, of Janesville, was seriously injured.
Police said Bridges was critically injured and spent several months in rehabilitation. His blood alcohol concentration at the time of the wreck was two times the legal limit, the report said.
On Monday, police arrested Bridges and charged him in the case.
He’s scheduled to appear in Rock County court at 8 a.m. on Nov. 30.
