Driver attempting to pass in no-passing zone killed in head-on wreck, officials say
WHITEWATER, Wis. — A 28-year-old man died Sunday afternoon in a head-on crash in Walworth County, officials said.
The Walworth County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to a report of a two-vehicle wreck at about 4 p.m. on Highway 12 just east of County Road P in the town of Whitewater.
According to the report, deputies found a 2007 Suzuki Reno and a 2014 Ford F150 pickup in the ditch on the north side of Highway 12, with extensive damage. The drivers were trapped.
Officials said Brandon Lee Garecht of Janesville driving the car east on Highway 12 when he attempted to pass several vehicles in a no-passing zone. The car struck the pickup, which was headed west, head-on.
The Ford F150 was driven by 69-year-old John Wallace, of Richmond, Illinois.
The sheriff’s office said that despite the first responders’ live-saving efforts, Garecht was pronounced dead at the scene by the Walworth County Medical Examiner’s Office. Wallace was taken by ambulance to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The crash remains under investigation by the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office Crash Investigation Team.
