Dr. Thomas J. Shepro
MADISON-Dr. Thomas Joseph Shepro, age 77, of Madison, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family on Friday, June 27, 2014.
He was born on March 9, 1937, in Marinette, the son of Joseph and Joyce (Maloney) Shepro. Thomas graduated from Marinette High School in 1956. He then enlisted in the US Air Force, serving until 1960, three of those years at Ramstain AF Base in Germany. Thomas was united in marriage to Mary LaBrosse on Dec. 30, 1961, in Krakow. He continued his education at Marinette County Teachers College, receiving a two year degree with certificate to teach elementary school in 1962.
Thomas taught in the Oconto Falls School District, teaching grades 5-8 at Stiles School and math and science at Oconto Falls Middle School from 1962-64. In 1965 he began teaching at Cambria/Friesland School District, both in the elementary school, 4th grade, and also in the middle school, math and science. Thomas then went on to receive a BS degree in elementary education at UW- Oshkosh in 1968, and from 1967-70 he continued at Cambria/Friesland as Interim Superintendent, administrative assistant and high school principal. From 1970-72, he was principal at Rio High School, then returned to UW- Madison, where he received a MS degree in educational administration in 1972.
Thomas then served as School Superintendent at Lena School District until 1975, at the Beloit Turner School District until 1978, and at Jefferson School district until 1989. During his time at Jefferson, Thomas attended UW-Madison, receiving a PhD in educational administration in 1983. From 1989-94 he was employed as Agency Administrator at Cooperative Education Service Agency #2. Taking on a new career in Real Estate Sales, Thomas then worked for Century 21 in Madison, and in 1995 returned part-time as Interim District Administrator at Highland School District for a year and lastly at Argyle School District as part-time District Administrator. Thomas enjoyed reading, golfing and boating. He was a director in the Madison Bridge Club, achieving bridge life-master in 2007 and bronze life-master in 2010.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary; children, Christine (Kurt) Shepro-Stein and James Shepro; two grandchildren, Irie Stein and Matti Stein; mother, Joyce Shepro; and siblings, Daniel (Jane), Joseph (Kathy), Steven, and Catherine (Mark) Kappell. He is further survived by many cherished nieces, nephews, Godchildren, and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph; and brother, Robert.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 5101 Schofield St., Monona, at 1 p.m. on Thursday, July 3, 2014. Visitation will be at the church from 11 a.m. until the time of the mass on Thursday. Military Honors will be conducted.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Carbone Cancer Center, Wounded Warrior Project or to a charity of your choice.
