Dr. Richard H. Nelson

MONONA-Dr. Richard H. Nelson, age 84, of Monona, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2012, at Kindred Hearts Memory Care.

He was born on Nov. 8, 1927, in Madison, the son of Harry H. and Margaret C. (Petersen) Nelson. Richard was a graduate of East High School in 1945. He married Phyllis Weger on Aug. 14, 1948, at Bethel Lutheran Church. Dick attended UW-Madison, and then transferred to the Palmer School of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. After graduation, he returned to teach at the Chiropractic Hospital in Davenport, Iowa. In 1958, Richard opened Nelson Chiropractic on Johnson Street, and then moved the practice to Monona, retiring in 1992.

He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church, East Side Business Men’s Association, and Elks Club. Dick enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, and took great pride in his Cadillacs. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family. Richard’s grandchildren were his and Phyllis’ greatest joy.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Phyllis; his two children, Jeffrey (Sally) Nelson of Stoughton and Cheryl (Jeff) Urso of Verona; eight grandchildren, Ryan Ulrich, Heather (Kendall) Buttchen, Richard Nelson, Robert (Tessa) Nelson, Trenton Nelson, Mandy Urso, Seth Urso, and Lyssi Urso; four great-grandchildren; sister, Virginia (Raymond) Nelson-Price of Colorado; along with other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at Noon on Saturday, Sept. 1, 2012, with the Rev. Curt Everson presiding. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday. Memorials may be made to Agrace HospiceCare, 5395 E. The family would like to thank Agrace HospiceCare for all their wonderful care and compassion. Richard was a very caring, compassionate, and generous man that will be greatly missed by all his family and friends. He always put the needs of others before himself. We love you!
