DOT puts highway projects on hold for 4th of July travel

Beltline lanes will be split around bridge construction, DOT says

Construction on most major highway projects in the state will be suspended at noon on Friday to accommodate heavy traffic that is expected for the long holiday weekend, officials said.

The construction projects will resume Tuesday, but motorists may still see narrow lanes, lane shifts and reduced speeds in construction zones, according to a release.

“Peak travel times are expected between approximately noon and 8 p.m. on Friday and Monday,” Don Greuel, with WisDOT’s Project Services Section, said in the release. “Traffic will be heavy throughout the holiday period, so driving through work zones will require caution and patience.”

Last year, five people died in traffic crashes in Wisconsin during the Fourth of July holiday period, officials said.
