DOT: All lanes of traffic now open after deadly, 29-vehicle crash

All lanes of traffic on the interstate are now open after a deadly multivehicle crash on Highway 18-151 Monday morning, officials said.

Crews responded just before 8 a.m. The Dane County Sheriff’s Office said the crash involved as many as 29 vehicles. Poor visibility due to heavy patches of fog is believed to be a contributing factor. Speed was also a likely factor, officials say.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Elise Schaffer said six people were taken to the hospital for injuries suffered in the crash, and one was flown by medical helicopter.

A 53-year-old woman was killed in the crash, the sheriff’s office said.

“It looked a little bit like chaos this morning, in terms of vehicles just sort of all over the road, in the ditch,” Schaffer said. “It was certainly a significant crash and something we’ll be working on throughout the day.”

The fog hindered visibility, and people couldn’t see 10 feet in front of them.

“We do know that some people pulled off to the side of the road when they realized that they just could not see, and stopped,” Schaffer said. “Certainly that was in their favor. Anytime you can’t see in front of you, you want to keep it slow. Or if you can’t see at all, just pull off and stop.”

The sheriff’s office asked anyone who witnessed the crash to call the tip line at 608-284-6900.

Uninjured occupants and motorists from the immediate crash scene were taken to the Verona Fire Department, the sheriff’s office said. Concerned family members were instructed to go to the Verona Fire Department to make contact with their loved ones and should avoid going directly to the crash scene
