Dorothy O. (Gerken) Tiller

Dorothy O. (Gerken) Tiller

Dorothy passed away peacefully on January 20, 2018, at her daughter’s house from a series of strokes while recovering from a broken hip incurred after a recent fall in her home.

She lived in her own home for 45 years up until her fall.

Dorothy was very proud of her family history. Having been born in 1931 in her family homestead house in Dyersville, Iowa, her family moved to the Texas panhandle where she grew up on a farm during the Dust Bowl and Great Depression. During Dorothy’s teenage years, the family moved back to Iowa where she enjoyed living and working on the farm.

Dorothy married Donald Tiller on April 7, 1956 and became a homemaker, living mostly in the Madison area raising 11 children. She belonged to the Good Shepherd Parish (St. James) Madison.

She loved art, home decorating, tying quilts and many sewing projects. Spending time in her garden, including weeding, was a lifelong pleasure. She used to say “If you need some solitary time pull weeds, people usually don’t interrupt you since they might be asked to help.” “Goodbye for now”

The family would like to thank the staff at St. Mary’s Hospital and Agrace Hospice for their devoted care.

A private memorial will be held for immediate family at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to Ryan Funeral Home, 2418 N. Sherman Ave., Madison, WI 53704 which will be divided among charities of her choice.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Tiller; son; David Tiller; parents, Oscar Gerken & Martha Gerken (Wernke); sister, Carol Kleitch; and son-in-law, Greg Kraege.
