Dorothy C. Porter
Dorothy C. Porter, age 88, a lifelong Janesville resident, passed away Saturday afternoon, September 15, 2012 at Mercy Hospital & Trauma Center. She was born August 1, 1924 in Janesville, the daughter of the late Leo & Ruth (Douglas) Cooper. She attended school in Janesville, and was a graduate of Janesville High School, Class of 1942. Dorothy married Howard J. Porter, Sr. on June 15, 1946 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. He preceded her in death on April 2, 1983.
She worked for many years at Mercy Hospital, first as an Aide in Pediatrics, and then as an Operating Room Technician until her retirement. She was a very avid Cub, Packer and Badger fan! Dorothy enjoyed entering contests, and won many fabulous prizes, most notably trips to the 1999 All-Star game in Boston, and the 2005 World Series in Houston against the Chicago White Sox. She was a very devoted volunteer to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and to the church school. She gave of her time helping with funeral dinners, and also would work BINGO when needed. She was a very talented bowler, and participated in many leagues until her health declined.
Dorothy was a very devout Catholic. She was a true woman of prayer, and enjoyed reading her Bible. She will be remembered by her family and friends for never missing an occasion with a card in the mail! She loved being with her beloved cat, Ronan, and always loved spending time with her family!
She is survived by her 3 children, Charles (Linda) Porter, of Bartlesville, OK, Christine (Verne) Sommerville, of Edgerton, and Richard (Kim Paluch) Porter, of Janesville, her 2 daughters-in-law, Sherry Porter, of Janesville, and Terri Ross, of Cudahy, WI, her 3 sisters, Edna Cooper, Jean (Eugene) Brown, and Joyce Strunz, all of Janesville, 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, and by many nieces, nephews, and friends. Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by 2 sons, Howard J. Porter, Jr., and Stephen “Howie” Porter, her 4 great-grandchildren, Chase, Coulter, Daniel, and Jeffrey, and by her 8 siblings, Leo, Mary, John, Esther, Ruth Ann, Doug, Phillip, and Connie.
Funeral services with a Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, September 19, 2012 at ST. PATRICK’S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 315 Cherry St., with Fr. James Kuhn officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Friends may call on Tuesday from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. at the WHITCOMB-LYNCH-ALBRECHT FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICE, JANESVILLE, 21 S. Austin Rd., or from 10:30 until 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday at the CHURCH. Memorials in Dorothy’s name may be made to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.
