Donald R. Miller, Sr.
Donald R. Miller, Sr., age 91, originally of Janesville, of Trotwood, OH, passed away Friday, October 24, 2014 at Hospice of Dayton, following an extended illness. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Ione, parents, Richard & Elsie Miller & by 6 siblings, Geraldine Sands, Dorothy Bateman, Edward Miller, Fred Miller, Norma Warner & Evelyn Beaudin. He was a 1942 graduate of Janesville High School. He served in WWII in the US Army AirCorps with the 8th Air Force, 44th Bomb Group. He was shot down on his 25th mission and spent time in a German POW camp. Don attended Milton College & the University of Wisconsin. He had a 40 year career with the Parker Pen Co., serving in manufacturing, quality control, premium marketing and then as regional and national sales manager, which brought him to Dayton, OH, while always having a home in Janesville. He earned many sales awards. He enjoyed spending time with his family, gardening, pen collecting, and speaking at many colleges where he assisted professors in developing sales & marketing skills for their students. He was very active in many clubs and organizations during his lifetime, including, Past Pres., Janesville Jaycees, Janesville Lions Club, VFW Post 1621, Past Sec.Treas. of the Janesville Moose Lodge, Janesville Western Star Lodge, York Rite Chapter 5, Commandery #2, Gehal Council #2, Zor Shrine Club in Madison, Kentucky Colonel, United Commercial Travelers of America, PTA Travel Protection Association, GOP, and numerous Regional & National promotional and advertising Trade Associations. He also helped to start the Janesville Boys Baseball Club and he enjoyed success himself in both softball & bowling.
Don is survived by children, Bonnie Krueger, Beloit, Don Miller, Jr., Gallatin, TN, Taffy Smith, Trotwood, OH, Pixie Miller, Judy (Bob) Mallu, Jim (Marilyn) Miller, all of Janesville, Bob Miller, Knoxville, TN & Beth (Roger) Duncan, Clayton, OH; 12 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren & 1 great-great-grandson; in-laws, Alice Miller, Delores Miller & Elwood Beaudin, along with numerous other relatives, friends and business associates. Throughout his life, Don was very grateful to the many people who touched his life in business and community activities. As his friend Tony said, “Don was a mentor to everyone in the sales industry.”
At Don’s request, his only services will be held Thursday, Oct. 30 at 11:00 AM at the graveside at Town of Rock Cemetery in Afton. Local arrangements are entrusted to SCHNEIDER APFEL SCHNEIDER & SCHNEIDER FUNERAL HOME and CREMATORY, JANESVILLE. The family would like to thank both Sterling House in Englewood, OH & Hospice of Dayton for the loving care offered to Don. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church, 302 N Parker Dr, Janesville, WI 53545.
