Donald Gattshall, age 86, died at his home on Monday, January 27, 2014 surrounded by his family. He was born in Rantoul, Kansas on July 26, 1927, the son of the late Elza LeRoy and Cora (Hatz) Gattshall. He graduated from Prairie du Sac High School and attended North Central College in Naperville, IL. Donald served in the U.S. Army from 1951-1953 and was stationed in Japan. Following military service he completed training at mortuary school in Milwaukee. He worked at Gattshall & Gruber Funeral & Furniture which later became Gattshall Brothers Furniture until 1981. Donald served on both the local school and hospital boards with a civic mind and an open heart. Donald married Eileen Gerlach on June 10, 1958. Together they enjoyed their home in Gruber’s Grove on Lake Wisconsin, traveling with family and playing bridge. The companionship of his family and friends was his true joy. His sense of humor was appreciated by all who knew him. When telling a story or a joke there was always a smile on his face.
Survivors include his wife, Eileen; two children, Carol Gattshall of Madison and Mark Gattshall of Oregon; a sister, Betty Kinzler of Martinsville, Indiana; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Lisa; two brothers, Wayne and Russell; and a sister, Florence Hagemann.
Funeral services will be held at CONCORDIA UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, Prairie du Sac, at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 1, 2014 with Pastor Doris Simpson officiating. Burial will follow in the Prairie du Sac Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Saturday, one hour prior to the service.
The family would like to thank Home Health United Hospice for their wonderful kindness and professional care. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Concordia United Methodist Church, Sauk Prairie Memorial Hospital Foundation, Heifer International, or the charity of choice.
In his last days Donald embraced these words of Budda: “In the end these things matter most….How well did you love?, How fully did you live?, How deeply did you learn to let go?”
