Donald Elmer “Barney” Gugel, son of Louis Andrew and Dealma Mae (nee Smith) Gugel, born on June 6, 1941 in Madison, WI was known for his dry sense of humor, his peaceful demeanor, involving many of his friends in his passion for the Wisconsin Badgers and Green Bay Packers, car racing, golf, and exploring the cultures of the world. He was sanctified into the body of Christ on December 28, 2014.

Don graduated from Edgewood High School in 1960 and served his country in the U.S. Air Force for four years where he was trained as a computer specialist. He also spent one-and-a-half years at Oscar Mayer, five years at Carnes Corp. in Vernon, and 26 years with the Wisconsin Department of revenue. After his retirement in 1997 Don delivered Meals on Wheels for 10 years, was involved in activities at his life-long parish including the baking of pfeffernuesse cookies for the Annual St. James Festival, and continued his traveling bug making it to 88 countries. He was a member of the Madison Eagles and the Gridiron Club.

Don is survived by his sister, Dorothy L. Mattke of Pardeeville, WI and her children Lynn (Stephen) Muench of St. Louis, MO; Daniel (Sally) Haberkorn of Pardeeville; Dennis (Jennifer) Haberkorn of Germany; Sheryl Brown of DeForest; and Jay (Julia) Haberkorn of Verona; his sister-in law Rita (Steve) Pavlin of Lindenhurst, IL and Rita and James “Jim” W. Gugel’s children Gregory (Tina) Gugel and Eric (Renee) Gugel both of Antiock, IL; and 10 great-nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother James and his parents.
Don wishes to thank his cousin George Luther, raised like a brother, and his wife Kathy, his sister, nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews, and his many close friends for their help, concern, and support throughout his life. He and his family would also like to thank the staff of Agrace Hospice Care for their tender care in his final days.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at GOOD SHEPHERD CATHOLIC PARISH AT THE ST. JAMES CHURCH, 1134 St. James Ct., Madison, on Friday, January 2, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. with Monsignor Tom Baxter officiating. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass.
